Hayfever

As we appear to be approaching the end of what has been a sweltering summer I thought I would take the opportunity in this months column to talk about our skin.

We all know that we should take care of our skin it is after all the largest organ of our body. Skin is composed of two layers, the epidermis which is the outer layer and the dermis or inner layer, both layers differ in structure and function

Natural

Skin has three major functions

Protection - Our skin protects us against the external environment. It comprises a barrier against micro-organisms and trauma. It also protects us from loss of water and mineral salts

Excretion - Skin is one of the four main organs responsible for excretion, about a quarter of the bodies waste is eliminated via the skin.

Regulation of temperature - The skins numerous sweat glands regulate water excretion helping to control and regulate the bodies temperature

When treating skin complaints herbalists have a whole pharmacopoeia

Traditional remedies use plants such as Marigold (Calendula officinalis) because of its Soothing and healing properties

Lavender (Lavandula officinalis) has a long history as a treatment for burns

Comfrey sometimes called knit bone (Symphytum officinalis) is excellent for bruises and sprains

Nowadays we are just as likely to include Tea Tree for its antiseptic properties and the excellent Aloe Vera which is good for cuts, burns and infections, it works by forming a membrane over cuts protecting against infection while the skin below heals and renews itself , it soothes inflamed, sore and itchy skin

Myrrh (Comiphora molmol) is an invaluable remedy for boils and ulcers

Garlic (Allium sativum) compresses are also wonderful for varicose ulcers, this is best combined with Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) because of its demulcent properties.

Regular moisturising and exfoliating should be included in everyone's skincare regime. We can also use this time to check for any potential abnormalities that may occur such as moles, lumps etc.

Skin problems may be due to numerous factors

Hereditary - certain conditions run in families, this is especially the case with the various allergic conditions

Allergies often show themselves in the skin whether this be due to foods, medicines or environmental factors

Poor nutrition is another and often overlooked cause of skin problems, some vitamin deficiencies make themselves apparent via the skin

Trauma to the skin is obviously a problem in itself and can predispose to further investigation
